GBV CampaignMISSSEY, our partners Young Women’s Freedom Center, Family Violence Law Center, DreamCatchers, Alliance for Girls and other Oakland advocates and community leaders launched a campaign calling on the City of Oakland Councilmembers to speak out against gender-based violence (GBV). GBV includes domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking, all of which disproprotionately impacts women, non-binary, and trans-identified people of color. In the city of Oakland, domestic violence rose from 2,169 reports in 2019 to 4,076 reports in 2020: a 188% increase. Oakland, we need to do better! We requested that the city adopt recommendation numbers 149 and 74 from the Reimagining Public Safety Task Force report, allocating $20 million to the Department of Violence Prevention, and $2.5 million for gender-based violence prevention.
